GSA looks 5G spectrum worldwide

The Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) has provided a snapshot of 5G spectrum activity around the world as of the end of December 2017. “Activity” can include plans, trials, and regulatory consideration. The bands range from 600 MHz to 86 GHz. There’s some inaccuracy as GSA depends on incomplete information from some regulators, operators, and vendors, but it’s the best collection of public domain information.

GSA counts 42 country regulators actively considering 5G spectrum (consultations, auction plans, etc.). Details are provided for each country. Worldwide, the 3400-3600 MHz band has the most regulator activity (35 countries), followed by 3600-3800 MHz (23), 24.25-29.5 GHz (19), 700 MHz (10), 1400-1500 MHz (9), 600 MHz (5) and 13 more bands.

In 5G trials, the U.S. is the leader in the number of planned or ongoing trials — GSA counts 35. This is followed by Japan with 31. China and South Korea each have 19.
